now if I'd known, they'd line up just to see him

a few cartoon network related posts, for animation fans.

first there is a homegrown exhibit of design produced by the CN in-house creative team showing at MODA, museum of design atlnta (full disclosure, if you didn't know already i used to work at CN). i haven't been able to get much information out of former associates, but the photos i've seen have been intriguing. if you're in the area between now and may 19, it might be worth checking out. i'm also hoping some things i worked are are on view, but haven't confirmed yet.

there is also a CN sponsored animation dealy touring the country. i don't know much about this show but below is a schedule and link if you're interested:
Boston, MA
February - April 2007, Museum of Science
Columbus, OH June - August 2007, COSI
St. Paul, MN February - April 2008 Science Museum of Minnesota
Indianapolis, IN June - August 2008, Children's Museum of Indianapolis
Indianapolis, IN October - December 2008, Children's Museum of Indianapolis

"top design takes over grand central"

...or so trumpeted some pr fed web site or other regarding the bravo event. everything went off without a hitch (good thing no one looked too close), and the site has already, sadly, been taken down (awww). it will live on forever in my heart, as well as here. as promised here are some photos in case you couldn't be there. it was nice to see my mental picture brought to bigger than life proportions. but it doesn't last forever on on to the next thing it is.

and now a couple referrals for creative junkies. i wanted to alert copyranter that i was going to link to him, but i couldn't find a contact. he's doing what i'd like to be doing if i wasn't trying to just come at you with the good stuff. but he's just saying what we're all thinking, and are too needy (or greedy) for the money to say. i don't think it's good etiquette to link to someone unless you ask first, but, hey, if you ever see this and one it taken off just let me know!

also i read an article by rance crain in ad age that put into words, better than i ever could, my feelings for the current state of design. i find design to be too flip and momentary, too pretnetious, or just lame. there's not many agencies or designers hitting my sweet spot these days. mainly i feel like the homework isn't being done. if for some reason the link changes the title is 'Here's a Weird Idea, Marketers: Create Ads to Build Your Brand'. i mean the temptations had their moves and dancing down, but they also had those songs. nowadays no one looks beyond the moves.

next stop: top design

i didn't intended to toot my own horn in this blog, but i'm working on a project that i'm particularly excited about. if you happen to be in, or could make the trip to, new york city from jan 29-feb 4, i hope you can check out an installation i worked on which is being put up this weekend.

it's an environmental space, located at grand central station, subway shuttle track 4, to promote the upcoming interior design competition show, top design. (premiering this wednesday, jan 31 at 10 on bravo, and featuring designers todd oldham, jonathan adler and kelly wearstler. end of free plug.) not only is it the first project in a long time that i've been able to really sink my teeth into, it is the first installation of it's kind at grand central, a place near a dear to my heart. hopefully i'll at least be part of some historical footnote, with this project.

look for photos to be posted, and if anybody should happen to see it (out of the 5 of you), please let me know what you think.

design crush: welcome to parradise

i've been watching this guy for a while now. he's smart and funny, and his art is sooo dreamy...sigh. he's, like, from europe (amsterdam, actually) so he's rilly sophisticated. he also just goes by one name, parra, isn't that cool? i first saw his work on some postcards i found in chelsea (i know what you're thinking–WRONG-O!) for a club night called 'demon days' (scary hot, right?). i wasn't sure what it was all about, but i saved them and hung them up.

so, anyway his work is like, part yellow submarine, part schoolhouse rock, and all awesome! he does advertising and junk, but i rilly like his club flyers. his colors just knock me out and his lettering is refreshingly hand done looking. if only more objects around were as beautiful as this. his information on the web isn't that recent, but i'll leave you with a couple more teases...

manifesto schmanifesto

it's always difficult and intimidating to write the first posting. which is why i decided to do it really half assed. why over think it, right?

i hope to keep this blog a little more upbeat than previous blogs i've been associated with. this recent period of time has been the most difficult in a while and i hope to make something positive happen in the near future. i plan on keeping abreast of my personal interests and projects and share some of the frustrations and rewards of life as a husband/dad/creative. the next few months could bring some much needed changes, LIFE ALTERING CHANGES, or i could just crash and burn...
